A Love Letter to the Game of Hockey

20170412

Today the Blue Jackets play the first playoff game of the season. For me it will also be the first time seeing them in the playoffs. So, between loads of laundry and marinating/baking chicken, I started to play around with the layout for a book that I'm putting together.

This got me excited for a couple reasons:

The first reason is that I always enjoy making books with my images - seeing how a series of images unfolds to tell a story and seeing how different images interact with one another. It's also nice to make sense of the chaos that's created by a hundred seemingly random images that you end up with after shooting for multiple days. When I do this I always come across gems that I forgot that I ever photographed.

The second reason is that the my Blue Jackets are in the playoffs. I have been watching this rowdy group for a few years now and it's pretty awesome to see them to go from finishing almost dead last in the league to being amongst the top teams in the league in just a year.

I'm doing this book for my own amusement at this point. I started to take a film camera to CBJ development camp, then training camp, and then to the World Cup of Hockey practices held in Columbus. I just enjoy being around the game and the players and soaking everything in. Shooting in these extreme conditions has ultimately made me a better photographer, too. There's nothing like photographing a fast paced game with a completely manual camera to completely slow you down and force you to think about everything that you're doing. I got better at exposure and development because of it, too. I'm certain that I could come up with an image in almost any circumstance with a roll of Tri-X and a fresh batch of D76. If I end up with a book that I can give to friends and family that also love the game, that's even better.

There's more to come soon, but right now I'm going to get out of the house for a bit before the Jackets-Pens game starts. Go Jackets!

    Photographing Friends

When I get the chance, I always jump on the opportunity to photograph friends. Whether it is to document our relationship or a specific event or time, they are always the photos that I come back to the most.
