Candy is as much fun to photograph as it is to eat. My sister, Katie, opened a candy shop in Oakwood (Dayton). So, now whenever I need a little sugar rush and she needs some marketing photos made, we both win. The candy is colorful and glossy and once you get that whole "don't play with your food" thing out of the way it's a blast.
Katie has been interested in business for a long time, just waiting for the right thing to come along. Nothing major, but she's been spit-balling ideas for a while now. She's been figuring out what she could pour herself into to see what she could create. And, candy just makes sense.
On days off when we were kids, we used to gather up some cash (probably the change we found in the sofa), and stop at the carry out that had penny candy before meeting up with friends. A lot of the candy we had then - taffy, Runts, Air Heads, 100 Grand bars - are in her candy shop now. It makes sense that she would go this direction in her life now - creating a place for kids in her new neighborhood so that they could have similar experiences. It's super cool to see her pull everything together to really go for it.
If you're in the area, stop by and try some new/weird/funky candy.

Every year I get excited when the Blue Jackets development camp rolls around. As a fan of the Jackets, I always feel good about how well they played in the prior season. But, after it's over I also feel like our season was a little shorter that it should' Read more
