The all new Sigma BF is something special.
Albeit, it is very strange in comparison to its competition. Most other interchangeable lens cameras are black painted, magnesium chassised, rubber coated blobs built to the intention to fit best in the grip of the right hand. Screens, viewfinders and controls filling in the gaps.
The BF is instead machined from aluminum, using an intense process that limits production, adding to it’s sense of singularity. In the hands it feels more like something that should occupy a pedestal, rather than something that’s in a Domke bag slung over my shoulder in the woods.
That is big part of this camera. It is clearly not made to replace a large full-frame spec-sheet topping flagship camera. It’s appearance makes it fit into the aesthetic that we are all familiar with in aluminum Apple products. We don’t second guess having an iPhone around us at all times – why not add a sexy mirrorless camera to the mix.
